What is mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy involves a simple series of injections that help break down unwanted small localized areas of fat. This process of breaking down body fat is referred to as lipolysis.

Treatment: Mesotherapy

Patient results may vary

This method of spot fat reduction by injecting solutions into the skin is incorporated in many name-recognized procedures. Some physicians add additional treatments to increase the effectiveness.

Areas treatable with injection-based lipolysis include:

  • Upper and lower abdomen

  • Thighs

  • Upper arms

  • Fat bulges below the bra-line

  • "Love handles"

  • Saddlebags

  • Double chin

  • Residual fat deposits post-liposuction

  • Cellulite

During your treatment, the solution is injected directly into the fat layers and connective tissue. The injection is relatively painless though some patients prefer the use of numbing cream. The medication produces a chemical reaction in conjunction with the body's physiology to harden the fat cell wall and begin a breakdown of localized areas of fat.

Benefits from each injection should be evident within three weeks of the treatment. Several treatments, four to six weeks apart, are often required to produce a fully satisfactory result.

What Is in the Injection?

The main ingredients used include phosphatidylcholine, multivitamins, and saline. Phosphatidylcholine is natural lecithin that contains two unsaturated fatty acids ( Linoleic- and alpha Linoleic acids) extracted from the soy plant.

Understanding the physiology of cellulite and the other causes for cellulite helps understand the various treatment options in helping to diminish or eliminate cellulite.  Cellulite is mostly heredity and in women, there is a strong hormonal element (estrogen dominance) that contributes to the appearance of cellulite.  Diet, social habits, and other types of cellulite can be treated depending upon the physiology and locations of these cellulite areas.

Mesotherapy is not a treatment, Mesotherapy describes an injection to the mesoderm layers of the skin.  There are (2) distinct treatments for Mesotherapy which include the emulsification and reduction of fat and in the treatment of cellulite. Fat reduction is easily achieved in small fat pocket areas such as the eyes, chin, underarms, saddlebags, love handles, and bra strap areas using PC/DC (50/42) which is a fat emulsifier commonly found in the foods we eat including salad dressings and margarine.  Once the mechanism of action occurs, the fat is absorbed back into the body. Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is the active ingredient and each injection covers a treatment area about the size of a quarter. Multiple injections (# of treatments) are required and may not work effectively on older patients, lax skin, and for patients looking for instant gratification.

The formation of cellulite occurs when lipids accumulate in fat cells of the hypodermis, the cells increase in size, the pressure reduces circulation, metabolism is reduced, and the connective tissue stiffens pulling down on the skin.  This is why the other contributing factors to cellulite are important in that it affects the vascularization of the connective tissues as well as the lymphatic drainage and the even distribution of fat that makes up the skin.

As a cellulite treatment, Mesotherapy is used as an irritant to force the body to diffuse the irritant through additional vascularization and lymphatic drainage.  Over a period of injections using a cocktail mix of non-harmful and natural irritants, noticeable improvement to cellulite areas occur as the subcutaneous fat chambers are rejuvenated from the increased vascular and again become elastic thus diminishing or eliminating the dimpling associated with cellulite.  The injections are made to the subcutaneous fat chambers where engorged fat chambers or inelastic fibers (bands) are causing the skin irregularity.  Increased vascular and lymphatic drainage occurs because of the irritants injected and thus the body reacts to these chemicals.  Besides using different medications, Mesotherapy cellulite treatments require many more injections to the affected area, require many more treatments, and can take several months to complete.

Diet, nutrition, and other cellulite conjunctive therapies enhance Mesotherapy cellulite treatments including the main culprit of cellulite – estrogen dominance among women.  Since cellulite is multi-factorial so should the treatments be in controlling and reversing the indication of cellulite.

It is estimated that 70% of women over 35 suffering from cellulite are estrogen dominant.  Correcting this condition by balancing hormone levels will diminish and can eliminate cellulite for women where this is the major contributing factor for cellulite.  Whatever the underlying reason(s) for your cellulite, there is a combination and conjunctive treatments that can correct this undesirable aesthetic condition.  Mesotherapy either as a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with other therapies has been proven worldwide as an effective treatment of both unwanted localized fat deposits and in correcting cellulite.
